Q&A
Q: What if someone else volunteers for a position first?
A: The more the merrier! There a few positions, such as the coordinators, that suggest only one person can fill the role. However, where fitting, more than one person can volunteer for a role, and they will function as a team. For example, instead of a single prayer ministry coordinator, there would be a prayer ministry team. We want to avoid it all falling on one person.
Q: Is every responsibility required of each ministry position?
Typically it is the expectation that a volunteer is accepting the responsibilities as stated. For example, it would not make sense for a bulletin secretary not to “prepare and print the weekly Sabbath bulletin”! But in some cases, the responsibilities can be flexible. Please feel free to ask!
Q: There’s a ministry I’d like to volunteer for, but I don’t see it listed here.
A: If a ministry isn’t listed, we can create one! For example, Health Ministries is not listed, but it is an integral part of our mission as Adventists who believe in a wholistic approach to health. I developed the descriptions based on what we had over the last term; it is by no means final. There are a few I have since thought to include, but have not had a chance to write up descriptions for. So, suggest away!
Q: Is there anything else I should know?
A: Though it is not mentioned in the descriptions, there are changes to children’s ministry. Anyone volunteering in children’s ministry is required to do a background check and training. It is the policy of the North American Division, Northern New England Conference, and the Williston SDA Church. The purpose is to do our best to protect and safeguard our children. There are no exceptions to this policy.
Q: Are there any other expectations?
A: “There is no standard for fellowship, a standard for membership, and a high standard for leadership.” It is expected that every volunteer, especially those in leadership positions, are members of the church; faithful in personal conduct to the Word of God; honor the Sabbath; and faithfully return a tithe. These are standards across our whole worldwide church.
